Deck StylesWhen it comes to choosing the overall style you want for your new deck build, there is no right or wrong way to go. You already have an idea in mind as to what you're going to be using this space for, so now you want to pick a style that matches up with your desired use. On top of that, you are going to want a style that truly compliments the exterior of your home, as you don't want something that doesn't look like it was meant to be there.
There are so many styles to choose from, but we wanted to use this page to write about the top styles we see when it comes to designing and building decks in the modern world we live in. Platform - These are most common for single-level, ranch style homes. The building process for these is relatively simple, and they can be constructed at a quicker speed compared to the others. During the build process, it's important to be careful with the areas where the lumber meets the ground, as the soil carries a significant amount of moisture. These types of decks don't normally have railing, so your cost is reduced in materials needed. Raised - This is also a classic build, and these are necessary if there are steps leading down into the yard from your home. The cost to build a raised deck is a bit higher than a platform style as you need more material to bring the deck up to where it needs to rest. The higher you need to go, the higher the cost. Two Story - These are not as popular for homeowners due to the construction skill and costs involved, although it is something that we have much experience performing. These are very common when a home has a walkout basement, and they tend to look very beautiful when added to a home. We also do multilevel and freestanding builds for homeowners. |

How to choose a deck style.
1. What makes sense? This is an obvious one, but we see many homeowners get an idea in their mind of a deck they want to build, and it simply does not make space when looking at the space they have to work with. You want something that compliments you home from an aesthetic perspective, and you also want something that is functional based on the use you are looking for. Asking yourself if something makes sense is very helpful during the design process.
2. What are we using it for? You are going to want to keep this in mind throughout the design process, and it helps to make sure you stay on track and don't go off on bunny trails. If you are only looking for a simple space to be added, then you most likely do not need a large build to be taking place. Asking this question will also save you money in the long run.
